I ran into my buddy Scott at the movies last night.  Scott's been at the heart of the music scene here in Portland for the better part of ten years and has seen the ups and downs.  We agreed we're finally seeing an "up" again -- everyone who was trying to "make it" left for LA or wherever, the phony venues and show bookers trying to make a quick buck have dissipated, and those of us remaining are all in it for the sake of it.  And the music is really good again.  'cause we're all friends, cause we go to each other's shows, cause we lend each other microphones and recording equipment, cause we see each other at the practice space and hear each other through the thin walls, cause all day at work we talk about what songs should go on each others albums, what shows we need to book, and what's happening this weekend.

Landlines' music is centered on Dustin Scharlach's honest, off-the-cuff songwriting, which ranges topics from counting tips to house shows to the daily horoscope without fuss or affectation.  Similarly, his guitar playing is both loose and "classic," alternately evoking the clean, chiming lines of Television or messy New Zealand noise-pop.  Behind him the rhythm section plays with upbeat restraint, but not without the occational sideways drum beat or nimble turnaround.  These songs are refreshingly straightforward, hiding nothing behind guitar effects or persona.  They are not jaded nor cynical, their openness a subtle challenge to the listener -- you can choose to relate or risk hard-heartedness.

Problems 24/7 was recorded at Dub Narcotic Studio in Olympia and mixed by Greg Saunier of Deerhoof.

Hi friends, I'm very happy to announce the opening of an art show documenting the last four years of Eggy Records.  Up for the month of December at Courier Coffee (923 SW Oak), the show features posters, printed matter, drafts and the tapes themselves, as well as a Half and Half-style peg board of tapes for sale.  The show is free and viewable during normal operating hours (7ish-5ish, 7 days a week).  Also, Courier serves the best coffee in Portland, so it's really worth the trip.  ALSO:

Psychic Feline - White Walls 7"
I realized recently that if I'm going to see a show, odds are it's a Psychic Feline show.  I've grown addicted to their -- to my ears -- distinctly West Coast sound; a combination of bristling punk energy and psychedelic mindset that is no stranger to either hypnotic repetition on one extreme or leveling guitar noise on the other.  "White Walls" is in and out with a deftly simple vocal line on top of a hiccuping beat, a riff to break things up and a momentary squall of double guitars to round everything out.  Can't imagine it's much longer than two minutes.  About as classic as they come.  "Non Dot" on the flip is an instrumental which is good but not nearly as good as the A, 'though that's not saying much.  If you are the type that enjoys a good 7", you are in for a treat.  Also, their first 7" on Highfives and Handshakes is quite good as well.  I am really proud that this came out of the city I live in.  $5

Witch Gardens - R.I.P. 7"
Don't be deceived.  Seattle is not actually a breezy, sleepy, laid-back place.  People are mean and uptight and serious there.  But you wouldn't know it from listening to Witch Gardens, who seem to have invented their own parallel Seattle-verse of whimsical characters and upbeat pop.  You might actually think for a second that Seattle might be a city in Sweden judging by the purity of the band's devotion to pop music.  Summer is around the corner, and honestly your synth-drone cassette tapes are going to start collecting dust when your mind switches to BBQs-and-going-to-the-river mode. $5

Yek Koo is Helga from Metal Rouge from LA, I got a tape she did for Stunned a couple years back and it's really great. Weird drum loops, singing and heavy psych shredding. Good stuff! She just did a 7" on the excellent Emerald Cocoon label.
Purple Pilgrims are new to me but on tour from New Zealand, which seems to have a pretty cool experimental scene going on right now.
LA Lakers is Shannon who does the Dungeon Taxis label/plays bass in the Renderers, Australian living in Brooklyn.

So, a lot of touring bands on the bill. Please please please consider coming out to this! Shows at Little Axe are always super comfortable, attended by your favorite people and over early. Bring a friend and some cheap beers. It will be great. Seriously.

Hi everyone,
I wanted to tell you about a new project I've been getting organized over the last few weeks in collaboration with Mississippi Records. We've coined the acronym "CSR" -- Community Supported Records -- for our venture, Mississippi CSR, which is a pay-in-advance record subscription club designed for fans of the label who have no easy way of getting the records. Subscribers will be insured copies of limited edition releases that will otherwise be hard to come by -- for example, a Prandit Prannath LP in a tiny edition of 300, and an affordable 5LP box of African guitar music in an even tinier edition of 200, both soon to be released -- and Mississippi will have the capital to start new and exciting projects. Two from Quemada:

Mole House - Hey Come My Way 7" - Quemada
My current favorite record at Eggy HQ, Mole House is a new project from Mickey Zulicki of Mad Nanna, Silk Ears and the Albert's Basement label. Very classic lo-fi pop, somewhere between the hazy melancholy of early Galaxie 500 and the off-kilter shamble of the Garbage and the Flowers at their most gentle. Lots of guitar jangle and sing-speaking, lyrics about life things. Three songs, all good, all understated and unpretentious. This one is really hitting home right now, wish I had more records like it. $7

Mad Nanna - I Hit The Wall 7" - Quemada
With releases coming at a steady clip from these guys, the quality is unflagging, and in fact, I Hit The Wall is something of surprise -- breaking from the unsettling bleakness of If I Don't Sleep Tonight the two cuts here are, well, quite catchy and quite straight. It was always true of Mad Nanna that the songs themselves were excellent -- they just happened to be played in such a manner that they barely held together. Here the band are really just being a pop band and it's great. Not slick or anything, just playing the songs well and clearly. And the songs are good -- one is good and the other is great. Highly recommended! $7
